What is Identity Politics?

To simply put Identity politics is when individuals of a particular race, ethnicity, culture, gender, or religion form alliances and mobilize to protect the interests of their party politically.

How did this emerge?

The formation of these aims to secure political freedom. The second half of the twentieth century saw the rise of large-scale political revolutions — Second Wave Feminism, Black Civil Rights in the U.S., gay and lesbian emancipation, and American Indian movements, for example –focused on arguments about oppression done to specific social classes.Such social movements are underpinned by and promote an intellectual body of literature that raises concerns about the existence, history and future of the identities that are being defended.

How far has it gone?

There are countries that may have gone too far with identity politics and an example would be the USA. When a group feels threatened, they retreat into tribalism. When another group feels mistreated and disrespected, they close ranks and become more insular or more defensive and these are usually the common situations that happen in the country.
